SMB (Simulated moving bed) Systems

  • Continuous separation for higher productivity and purity

Simulated moving bed chromatography is increasingly applied as a separation technique in the pharmaceutical industry, production of fine chemicals and in the field of bioengineering. SMB is a method in process chromatography that enables substance mixtures to be continuously separated and extracted in two fractions. By repeated use of the SMB process each partial fraction can be separated into a further fraction – down to binary substance mixtures. SMB efficiency is significantly higher than batch chromatography, through better utilization of the column stationary phase.

    FAQs

What Is FPLC, and How Does It Differ from HPLC?

Fast Protein Liquid Chromatography (FPLC) and High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) are both liquid chromatographic methods. FPLC purifies large biomolecules such as DNA or proteins, whereas HPLC uses high pressure to analyse small chemical compounds. FPLC requires different conditions to HPLC as biomolecules are sensitive to temperature, pressure and solvents that are typically used for HPLC.

Learn more about FPLC by reading our detailed blog on KNAUER chromatography instruments here.

What Are the Key Applications of Preparative Chromatography?

Primarily being used for high-value sample purification, preparative chromatography has a wide range of applications for various industries. One of the most common applications is for isolating pharmaceutical impurities. Other applications include:

    • Toxicology studies
    • High-purity main components/byproducts
    • Chemical library screening
    • Isolation and enrichment of analytical reference standards

What Factors Influence the Resolution and Yield in FPLC?

There are a number of factors that can impact the resolution and yield in FPLC, such as:

    • Column temperature
    • Column length and diameter
    • Polarity
    • Boiling point

What Are the Advantages of Using Automated FPLC Systems?

Some of the key benefits to using automated protein purification systems include:

    • Achieve reproducible results with controlled conditions
    • Efficient purification of sensitive and low-expressed proteins
    • Automated collection of purified protein
    • Easily monitor runs, evaluate results and create methods using software
    • Use of high-resolution chromatography media
    • Use inline detection to make informed decisions
