Products and SolutionsKnauer LNP Nobel Prize – mRNA

COVID-19 is just so 2020… and the main reason for that is the great work on the mRNA vaccine produced by Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman, which has been recognised this week in the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. Their work was fundamental as they made breakthroughs in understanding how mRNA interacts with our immune systems.

However, this work would not have been so significant if there was not a way of introducing the mRNA to the immune system. mRNA vaccines have a small amount of mRNA delivered within a lipid nano-particle (#LNP), and allows the vaccine to attach to cells allowing immunisation to begin. The formation of LNP’s from laboratory to production scale is possible by the precise mixing of the lipids, mRNA, and suspension solution. KNAUER Impingement Jet Module (IJM) systems allow for the development, scale up, and production of mRNA vaccines using the same technology from start to finish.
