Focus of the MonthCompactGC4.0 -TD: Analysing VOC/ BTEX at ppb-ppt levels

7 April 2025by verulam

Volatile components are present in nearly every atmosphere. Some of these components are toxic, have strict limit levels, and can cause inconvenience due to their low odour threshold. Gas chromatography – thermal desorption (GC-TD) is the technique of choice for air quality monitoring. It is an invaluable tool when sample enhancement is needed to reach the very low detection levels required.

The CompactGC4.0TD from GAS (Global Analyser Solutions) is a Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) analyser with a Peltier cooled on board thermal desorption trap. The trap pre-concentrates the components of interest from a precise air volume sent to the adsorption trap by using a pump and mass flow controller.

After sampling, the trap is purged for air and water removal using an inert gas. The trap is then rapidly heated, releasing the pre-concentrated components, sweeping them onto the analytical column by the carrier gas. A range of detectors are available including FID, TCD, PDD, PFPD, MS, VUV-LUMA for component identification.
