Focus of the MonthLCTech Mycotoxins

22 July 2025by verulam

Around 25% of global food production is destroyed due to mycotoxin contamination, often due to poor storage conditions. The analytical detection of toxins in food and feed therefore holds a high importance for cost-effectiveness and the health of the global population.

Nuts represent the largest fraction of food products rejected due to mycotoxins in the

area of import at EU borders. Hazelnuts are frequently found to be contaminated with aflatoxin G1/G2 as well as aflatoxin B1.

In this application note hazelnuts are extracted and then cleaned up with AflaCLEAN SMART columns using either manual (ThermELUTE Light) or automated methods (FREESTYLE with ThermELUTETM). Recoveries of aflatoxins B1, B2, G1 and G2 were found to be consistent in the range 2 – 20ppb with good chromatographic performance.
