Understanding and Addressing the Risks of Environmental DNA Contamination in Forensic Evidence Recovery from Victims and Suspects of Rape and Sexual Assault

Current DNA analysis technologies face anti-contamination challenges in sexual assault referral centers (SARCs) and police custody rooms due to uncontrolled background DNA levels. The UK Forensic Science Regulator established anti-contamination guidelines, including environmental monitoring (EM) and air replacement targets. A study of 24 forensic medical examinations revealed that while 84% of EM samples contained DNA, contamination of forensic evidence was not observed when appropriate measures were followed. This demonstrates effective risk management of DNA contamination in high-background environments, leading to defined cleanliness targets in FSR guidelines.

The Coriolis range of biological air samplers from Bertin Technology was used for this trial , which uses cyclonic technology to efficiently collect biological particles for microbiological analysis, providing quick results on air contamination levels.
